Canada vs America

Postby beavereater on Sun Feb 28, 2010 7:15 am

Well, 8 years ago I experienced the joy of watching Canada win Gold on American soil. It was the first hockey game that brought tears to my eyes. Torino was a joke, Canada was cocky and didn't think there would be the competition it had. Now, 2010, on home soil Canada has to win. We might have the most golds medals, but this medal is oh so important. I'll be glued to a T.V at a local sports bar either drinking for joy or drowning my sorrows in some fine malt liquor...I hope it's tears for joy again. The fact that we are up against the American team is what makes this game all the much better. If we were going against any other team, the victory would still be sweet, but the rivalry between our two nations in terms of hockey would make it that much better. Here's hoping for "Oh Canada" at the end of that game!!

Any others rooting for Canada?

When we played ice hockey outside we had a 'no off the ice' rule. We didn't play with pads which made it that much more interesting. The soft snow on the banks of the river/pond/lake made for good soft boards to get checked into. Always wore gloves, never wore a helmet. Been to the ER a grand total of 7 times to get stitches around my head for hockey related accidents...nothing really worthy of a real ER story, just a deep enough cut to need stitches. In the summer we used tennis balls for street hockey, or on occasion the harder orange plastic ball. Never got hit in the sack though, goalie always wore a catchers protector that was a bit over-sized and covered the jewels. We used foam from and old sofa and some shoe laces to make goalie pads...those were the days.

Yes, me. I am beginning to be able to cope with the exceptionally bad performance from us Swedes now  . I've always liked Canada in hockey (except for when we play against you, that is).

Oh yes.

Previous game against the Americans was a fantastic game - to bad we had weak goal tending... If we play today like we did on Friday then it'll be the Americans with the Gold.

I'm expecting an exciting game that could go either way.

Well, 8 years ago I experienced the joy of watching Canada win Gold........ Here's hoping for "Oh Canada" at the end of that game!!

i understand, beave. i remember the 80 lake placid gold medal run over the soviets and finland. i got shivers just watching highlights during this years broadcast. if canada wins i will be thrilled for them. i always support the host country, except the old soviet days. i guess it's an under dog thing. all i hope for is a great game going down to the very end. looks like we'll get it....

canadian hockey question for you beave...(or squirrel)-

being the national pastime of canada, the love and passion of the country, the ultimate medal for the country, makes me wonder about the nhl.

canada is a modern, prosperous country. many would argue the standard of living is near america's. yet for all the passion, the national importance, the prosperity, canada can't support hockey. teams have left for anaheim, tampa, atlanta, dallas, nashville, charlotte, phoenix. canada hasn't won a stanley cup since 1993.

why? are they only interested in olympic hockey?

We only have two cities that can realy compete with the NHL dollars and numbers (Toronto and Montreal). Other cities are too small and less willing to put up the big bucks.

On a more personal side - I don't understand the importance of the NHL... What is it about a team that make them your team?? The only thing is that you're paying them.

With the Olympics (and other events) the team really is your team - the Canadian team is made up of Canadians (as goes for any team). There is more pride here.

And as for hockey... Canada is born and raised in hockey.

your list of cities caught me off guard considering the hockey history and the wha years. from 2001 census @ wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_th ... _in_Canada
others would seem to qualify-
Vancouver, Ottawa–Gatineau, Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec City (Lévis), Winnipeg, Hamilton

while marginally smaller, would certainly attract the interest of a higher percentage of the locals for attendance, garner a higher tv viewership, and sell way more team products (jerseys, hats, team pictures....)

green bay has a pop of 102,000 and one of the most successful teams in pro sports.

a google of the commissioner claims this to be a marketing strategy-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Bettman

if true, it is shortsighted and sad.

pro sports have a trickle down effect. facilities, equipment, instruction, and public support/involvement are better if there is a pro team to associate with. that appears to be the idea behind having a franchise in nashville and not in edmonton.

great pics! really, is anything better than watching your kids get the thrill of life?

No, no winter olympics at all. They show the national sport - biking. They seem to have something for sweaty men in tights with their asses held up high. :disapprov:

@enstg8er : Your point about population is valid - yes we have larger cities. Difference is that the sports can't draw the revenue out of the Canucks the way they can out of the Yanks.

We can definitly agree on the thrill of the kids! I love watching the really young ones.

The 2010 gold medal game was, in my opinion, one of the finest matches ever played in any sport. Not on the same plateau as the US-USSR semifinal (well, Canadians may see them as being emotionally similar) but certainly worthy of a gold-lacquered Taiyo Yuden DVD-R.
